Approach to Therapy
The capacity to experience, tolerate, and use our range of feelings is a crucial life-skill, and a lifelong project. However, various life circumstances can complicate this task, making feelings difficult to manage, especially when they come to be experienced as anxiety provoking, shame inducing, overwhelming, confusing, or completely unrecognized. Unsurprisingly, difficulty managing feelings (or attempting to avoid them altogether) can lead to significant problems. Seeking out therapy can be invaluable in these circumstances.
I help clients understand and accept their feelings so that they can have a more full experience of themselves. I work hard to help my clients put words to their feelings. Growing the ability to experience feelings more fully, while challenging, can be profoundly transformative. When we build up our capacity to tolerate our emotions, we can avoid destructive behaviors that “protected” us from those feelings. Increased ability to tolerate our feelings builds up our understanding of them and what stimulates them.
The increased lived knowledge of our emotional experience becomes an invaluable “sense” we can use to detect what is happening in our world.
